NOAA Predicts Above-Normal 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season
June 09, 2022The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center, a division of the National Weather Service, already predicting above-average hurricane activity.
The 2022 season officially runs from June 1 through November 30, with the NOAA predicting 14-21 named storms throughout that time. Named storms have winds that exceed 39 mph or higher. Of the 14 to 21 named storms, 6 to 10 are expected to become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), with 3 to 6 of those becoming major hurricanes (category 3, 4, or 5 with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA provides these ranges with a 70% confidence.
